Built for people who need to actually remember things.

Memgrain is an independent study tool for three related problems: learning facts with flashcards, testing understanding with quizzes, and holding a passage in memory word-for-word. It is built and maintained by a small team, funded by subscriptions and advertising, and used by students, speakers, actors, and anyone who has to reproduce material from memory.

Why we built it

Most study apps handle one of these jobs well and ignore the others. Flashcard apps are excellent for atomic facts but hopeless for a two-page speech. Quiz generators produce questions but don't schedule anything. And verbatim memorization — scripture, poetry, monologues, legal definitions, presentations — is barely served at all, usually by tools that quietly paraphrase the text they were supposed to preserve exactly.

Memgrain started with the verbatim problem and grew outward. The rule from day one has been that the app never rewrites your source. If you paste a passage, the words you get back are your words, character for character.

What the app does

• Flashcards — generated from a document, pasted text, or a URL, then scheduled with an SM-2-style spaced-repetition algorithm.
• Quizzes — multiple-choice sets with deferred grading, non-linear navigation, hints, and explanations for the questions you miss.
• Verbatim memorization — a four-phase flow (Prepare, Learn, Practice, Test) with graded cues, keyword blanking, and a typing mode that colors each word green or red in real time.
• Progress tracking — study time, words memorized, streaks, and per-item scheduling so review time goes where it's needed.

The research behind it

Nothing in Memgrain is invented pedagogy. The app implements three well-replicated findings: the testing effect (retrieving information strengthens memory more than re-reading it), the spacing effect (reviews distributed over expanding intervals beat massed practice), and desirable difficulty (recall that takes effort produces more durable learning than recall that feels easy). How we make money

Memgrain has a free tier, a paid Pro subscription, and advertising on public pages. Pro removes ads entirely. We don't sell user data, and study content you upload is private to your account — see the privacy policy for specifics on what's stored and why.
